Professor Willem de Vos in the Wageningen University microbiology laboratory

2004, Wageningen

It started with a question nobody had asked.

In the early 2000s, under the leadership of Pr. Willem de Vos, a small team of microbiologists at Wageningen University in the Netherlands was studying the mucus layer of the human gut, a thin, living barrier most of medicine had overlooked. They weren't looking for a supplement. They were looking for what else might be in there.

What they found had never been described before. A bacterium living inside the
mucus itself, quietly influencing metabolism, weight, glucose, and inflammation
from a place no one had thought to look.

They named it Akkermansia muciniphila.
And they kept going.

The long work

Discovery is the easy part.

Twenty years is a long time to stay with one idea. It's longer than most companies exist. It's longer than most supplements survive on a shelf. But turning a bacterium into something you can trust with your health is not a matter of finding it. It's a matter of proving it, again and again, until the evidence is undeniable.

We cultivated the strain. We pasteurized it into the form clinical trials would eventually show works best. We ran the safety studies. We ran the human trials. We earned the first, and still only, EFSA Novel Food authorization for a pasteurized bacterium in the category.

By the time METAbiotics reached your medicine cabinet, it had already been through two decades of rooms most supplements never enter.

The difference

We’re the scientists, not just the marketers.

Many supplement brands start by sourcing an existing ingredient or licensing a strain, then building a formula around it. Our story started differently.

We started in the lab. Studying Akkermansia. Running the trials. Publishing the research. The product came later.

So when you take METAbiotics, you’re getting Akkermansia MucT®, the strain developed from our own research and decades of work by the scientists who have been studying Akkermansia from the beginning.

That distinction matters. With gut bacteria, differences in strain, form, stability, and delivery can influence how they function. It’s why we’ve spent decades not only studying Akkermansia, but understanding how to deliver its benefits effectively.

This isn’t a company that started with a supplement. It started with the science that made the supplement possible.

What we believe

Metabolic health is the conversation that
matters now.

Gut health has been the wellness story for a decade, and it’s a story we know well. But the science has moved on, and the language should too. What actually shapes how you feel and how you age is metabolism, energy, weight, glucose, inflammation, immunity, longevity, and the gut barrier is where all of it begins.

We believe metabolic health is proactive, not reactive. We believe science can be beautiful without being cold. We believe the best supplement is the one you keep taking for twenty years. And we believe that if you’re going to put something in your body every morning, you deserve to know exactly what it is, exactly who made it, and exactly what the evidence says.

How we work

The standards we
hold ourselves to.

Learn more
  • We hold to the
    ingredient, not the trend.

Two products, one engine, built to earn a permanent spot in your routine.

  • We publish the evidence.

    Our clinical work is peer-reviewed
and public. If we say it, you can
    read the paper.

  • We stay in the lab.

    The Akkermansia Company is
one of the only biotics company to have its proprietary lab

  • We source at the origin.

MucT™ is cultivated and pasteurized in-house under clinical-grade standards.
No middleman between the strain and
    the capsule.

what’s next

The discovery was the beginning.

Akkermansia is one bacterium. The gut is
home to trillions. We’re just starting to understand what the microbiome can do for metabolic health, longevity, immunity, cognition, and beyond, and we intend to be the company that keeps finding out.

New research. New formulations. New categories we haven’t named yet. If it lives in the microbiome and it matters for how you age, we’re already working on it.
