Our science
Twenty years of research. One bacterium. A new understanding of metabolic health.
Everything we make begins with Akkermansia muciniphila, discovered by our scientists in the mucus layer of the human gut, and the two decades of work it took to turn
that discovery into a supplement.
Our team
The people behind the science.
Behind every METAbiotics product is a team of pioneering scientists, clinicians, and biotechnology experts who have dedicated decades to understanding, developing, and producing Akkermansia muciniphila MucT®. From the original discovery of Akkermansia to clinical research and manufacturing excellence, their shared commitment ensures that every product is grounded in rigorous science and uncompromising quality.
Where it started
Wageningen University, the Netherlands.
In the early 2000s, our microbiologists at Wageningen were studying the mucus layer of the human gut, a thin, living barrier most of medicine had overlooked. What they found there had never been described before: a bacterium making its home in the mucus itself, quietly shaping human metabolism. They named it Akkermansia muciniphila. And for the next twenty years, they kept working.
The mechanism
It doesn't add to your gut. It strengthens what's already there.
Most probiotics introduce new bacteria and hope they take. Akkermansia works differently. It lives in the mucus layer that lines your gut, the barrier that decides what enters your bloodstream and what doesn't. When that barrier is intact, metabolism runs the way it's supposed to. When it's compromised, the effects show up everywhere: weight, glucose, energy, inflammation.
For years, the field assumed live bacteria were the only kind that mattered. Our team ran the trials that changed that. Through a proprietary pasteurization process, we developed Akkermansia MucT®, a stable, non-live form that survives stomach acid and bile and delivers its bioactive components exactly where they work. And in head-to-head human trials, pasteurized Akkermansia consistently outperformed live.
The evidence
The most clinically studied Akkermansia in humans.
Every claim we make is grounded in peer-reviewed human research.
